I know I ONLY work 1/2 time, but I'll tell you, I feel like I work full-time and then some. At least this week. I just wrapped up my last Parent/Teacher Conference at Bennion. It was a different experience. I have to say that it was nice to be able to have a decent conversation with the parents of my students, but I also felt like some of them wanted to chew me up and spit me out. I know I am the unproven new kid on the block, but give a girl a chance! The only thing that seemed to sit wrong with some of the parents was the fact that I have decided not to keep track of the students' reading minutes each week. Quite frankly, parents are going to have their children read if they want them to read. When I asked the parents if their child was reading at least 20 minutes a night, I always got an emphatic YES! In fact, most went out of their way to tell me that their child reads an hour a day. Fantastic! Since all of the students are already perfect at home readers, I fail to see the point to add one more thing that needs to be filled out and returned to me who has a ton of paperwork to deal with already. I guess some parents need a gold star for pushing their kids into greatness. Well, Gold Stars for everyone!
Overall, it was a great experience. It is refreshing to have parents that care about their child's education. My students are a hoot and a holler and we have very little incident in our classroom. It sure makes teaching fun when most everyone behaves. I'm very glad I made the move to my new school.
